Bangladesh cotton imports from India through the Bhomra land border fell 38.5% year over year during the first ten months of fiscal 2026 ending in June 2026.
Bangladesh imported 1,113 tons of raw cotton between July to April 2026 as against 1,810 tons in a year ago period. Indian cotton prices have also declined nearly 20% from a year ago
Analysts attribute the decline in cotton imports through the land border to subdued export demand for garments from Bangladesh.
Bangladesh remains one of the largest overseas buyers of Indian cotton and yarn, making the slowdown significant for Indian traders operating through eastern border trade corridors.
“Market participants noted that Bangladeshi buyers are increasingly limiting purchases to immediate consumption requirements while negotiating aggressively on prices and shipment terms,” Bonik Barta reported.
USDA estimates Bangladesh’s cotton imports at 8.2 million bales in marketing year 2025-26, with India remaining one of the key suppliers alongside Brazil and West African origins.
