New study puts number on microfibres which end up in environment

The textile sector sheds an estimated 92,000 tonnes of microfibres annually during manufacturing alone, and nearly two-thirds of that or upwards of 58,000 tonnes ends up in the environment.

According to Earth Study, which conducted the study, the findings of the report offer the most detailed accounting yet of where production-phase fibre pollution actually originates.

The study, compiled from mill-level data, sector surveys, and academic research, represents the first attempt to map microfibre leakage systematically across the manufacturing stage of the textile supply chain — pinpointing not just how much is lost, but where interventions could have the greatest impact.

One of the report’s most important findings cuts against conventional wisdom: existing wastewater infrastructure is already doing more work than commonly assumed, intercepting roughly 37% of fibres generated during production before they escape into waterways or soil. Yet capturing fibre isn’t the same as keeping it out of the environment permanently.

Wastewater treatment alone, the analysis found, trims total leakage by a relatively modest 6%. The real gains come from what happens to fibre-laden sludge afterward — shifting all facilities toward responsible sludge handling could cut leakage by 43% on its own.

Critically, the report frames treatment and sludge management not as competing options but as complementary halves of a single system: deployed together, their combined effect substantially outpaces what either delivers independently.

Upstream of the treatment plant, the report identifies textile design and construction as an outsized opportunity that remains largely untapped. Adjustments to yarn construction and fabric finishing, it finds, can reduce fibre shedding by 60% to 90% at the source — before a single fibre ever reaches a drain.

Rather than treating fibre pollution as a single-fix problem, the report lays out an intervention map spanning the full value chain — from brands making upfront specification decisions, to mills managing on-site treatment, to policymakers shaping the infrastructure investment that ultimately determines outcomes.

The headline projection: under an ambitious, coordinated scenario combining upstream design changes with downstream treatment and sludge management, production-phase microfibre leakage could fall by approximately 95% by 2032.

The report’s authors position the findings as a foundation for shifting industry strategy away from piecemeal, single-lever efforts and toward an integrated, evidence-based approach with measurable targets.
