Carbon-smart cotton: MP farmers diving into regenerative farming

In a significant development for India’s cotton sector, the Cotton Development and Research Association (CDRA), the technical arm of the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI), has entered into a collaboration with Beetle Regen Solutions to roll out regenerative farming practices across Khargone district in Madhya Pradesh.

The scheme is designed to support smallholder growers in adopting improved agronomic methods that restore soil quality, lift cotton output and build long-term resilience into the supply chain.

Central to the programme is the rollout of high-density planting systems (HDPS), alongside wider regenerative farming principles and the use of biochar. These techniques are intended to lift on-farm productivity while simultaneously improving soil structure, enhancing carbon sequestration, and bringing Indian cotton production closer in line with international environmental benchmarks.

Farmers taking part will be trained in HDPS and other regenerative techniques, positioning them to supply the growing international market for responsibly produced, low-impact cotton demanded by sustainability-conscious apparel brands.

The introduction of biochar to farming plots is expected to turn participating land into more effective carbon stores, strengthening the soil’s ability to lock away carbon and support broader emissions-reduction efforts.

Beyond the environmental gains, the initiative is expected to deliver tangible economic benefits, with improved fibre quality and higher yields translating into stronger returns for growers and greater prosperity across cotton-farming communities.

The tie-up between CITI-CDRA and Beetle Regen Solutions represents a further step in reshaping how cotton is grown in India, blending ecological restoration with commercial viability. Both organisations say the partnership is intended to demonstrate how Indian cotton can take a leading role in regenerative agriculture on the world stage.

CITI Chairman Rakesh Mehra indicated that the collaboration is intended to build a more sustainable model for cotton cultivation, one that raises farmer incomes while restoring degraded land, and described the initiative as an important contribution to India’s wider climate ambitions.

The programme underscores a broader push to position cotton farming as a driver of positive change across economic, social and environmental lines. Through this partnership, CITI-CDRA and Beetle Regen Solutions are working to establish a model in which Indian cotton production supports both rural communities and the natural environment over the long term.
