Indian athletes to wear jute-viscose apparel at Commonwealth Games 2026

Date:

The National Jute Board (NJB) in order to promote sustainable textiles developed jute-viscose blended apparel for Indian athletes and team members set to compete at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland, taking place from July 23 to August 2, 2026.

The initiative demonstrates the potential of 100 percent biodegradable jute-viscose blended fabric as an innovative, sustainable textile solution.

For the first time, jute-based apparel will be showcased at an international multi-sport event. This initiative is expected to give India’s jute industry global visibility, while showcasing the craftsmanship of Indian manufacturers and the contribution made by jute farmers.

With support from Gloster Jute Mills, Kolkata, the National Jute Board facilitated development of the jute-viscose blended fabric.

During the National Jute Board Foundation Day celebrations held in Patna on April 1, 2026, these innovative apparel products were first showcased, earning appreciation from representatives of the Indian Olympic Association.

The National Jute Board subsequently worked closely with the Indian Olympic Association to promote use of jute-based apparel among the Indian contingent, with the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), New Delhi, designing the apparel using the specially developed jute-viscose blended fabric.
