Uttar Pradesh has secured Rs 5,196 crore in fresh textile investment during the two-day UP Textiles Conclave-2026, as the biggest state in India eyes global textile hub status.
Chief Minister Adityanath Yogi outlined ambitions to establish a fully integrated textile value chain — running from fibre through to yarn, yarn into fabric, fabric into garments, and garments into recognised brands — before these products are pushed onto the world stage.
“Uttar Pradesh means ‘Ultimate Potential’,” the Chief Minister remarked, highlighting the state’s cultural legacy, skilled workforce, entrepreneurial spirit and sizeable home market as core strengths underpinning its ambitions on the global textile stage.
He further called on artisans to climb the value chain by establishing their own brands rather than continuing purely as suppliers to others.
Chief Minister Yogi noted that technical textiles are becoming increasingly significant across a range of fields — defence, healthcare, agriculture and sport among them — underscoring the need for Uttar Pradesh to build capabilities that extend well past yarn, fabric and fashion.
Manoj Gupta, who chairs MKU, said Uttar Pradesh had the potential to become a significant production base for high-performance defence materials.
He referenced MKU’s plant within the Kanpur Defence Corridor, where polyethylene-based high-performance fabric used in bulletproof vests and helmets is manufactured.
He contended that establishing a comprehensive ecosystem — spanning high-performance fibres right through to finished goods — could lessen India’s reliance on imports while opening up fresh avenues for investment and job creation.
The textile drive forms part of Uttar Pradesh’s wider effort to make the most of its industrial infrastructure and investment climate.
Ravi Sam, Vice Chairman of Texprocil and Chairman of the South India Textile Research Association (SITRA), said global instability and geopolitical friction were opening up fresh opportunities for India, particularly as free trade agreements unlock new markets.
He emphasised that Uttar Pradesh needs to prioritise skills training, capacity building, sustainability, traceability, reliable delivery timelines and modern processing infrastructure in order to meet international quality benchmarks.
The conclave also flagged textile machinery as a further area ripe for growth. Ketan Sanghvi, Chairman of the ITME Society and Lakshmi Shuttleless Looms, pointed to the state’s planned dedicated textile machinery park near Kanpur — covering roughly 1,000 acres — as a chance to build domestic manufacturing strength in a field where India still leans heavily on imports.
Uttar Pradesh is home to roughly 200,000 handloom and upwards of 500,000 powerloom weavers.
The state holds third place nationally for fabric output, contributing somewhere between 13-14% of India’s overall fabric production.
According to state officials, across the last six years, overseas shipments of textiles, garments and handicrafts out of Uttar Pradesh have climbed by approximately 56%, propelling the state to fourth position among the country’s leading exporters in this category.
