Burkina Faso deepens push for self-sufficiency with $30mn textile mill

Date:

Burkina Faso has commissioned a US $30 million textile manufacturing complex as part of a wider strategy to build up domestic cotton-processing infrastructure and cut the nation’s dependence on imported garments by capturing more value within its own supply chain.

President Ibrahim Traoré formally opened the Textile des Forces du Burkina Faso (TEXFORCES-BF) plant, which is spread across a 30-hectare site and this facility represents one of the country’s most significant industrial investments in textiles to date.

The plant is designed to supply uniforms for the Defence and Security Forces and the Volunteers for the Defence of the Homeland, alongside apparel for civilian consumers and help the country to add value to the cotton the country produces as against exporting the fibre.

Officials say the site can currently process upwards of 12 tonnes of raw cotton fibre each day and is a vertically integrated textile mill from spinning to garmenting.

Once fully operational, the government anticipates the plant will turn out 20 million metres of fabric annually, together with 6 million knitted garments, 6 million uniforms, 6 million T-shirts and 1 million pairs of socks, according to an official statement released by the government.

TEXFORCES-BF forms part of a broader national drive to expand cotton-processing capability and bolster home-grown textile manufacturing. Over recent years, Burkina Faso has rolled out a series of projects aimed at reinforcing the infrastructure needed to process cotton domestically rather than exporting it raw.

Back in November 2025, authorities launched the National Centre for Support to Artisanal Cotton Processing (CNATAC) and is intended to upskill and support artisanal textile producers across the country.

Fresh private capital could further accelerate the sector’s expansion. In July 2025, Burkina Faso’s Caisse des Dépôts et d’Investissements (CDI-BF) entered into a memorandum of understanding with Kenya’s Basra Textile Mills to develop an integrated textile facility domestically. The venture, valued at roughly $25 million, may be structured as a public-private partnership.

This growth in processing capacity coincides with government efforts to secure greater cotton supply. For the 2026/2027 growing season, officials are targeting cotton output of 532,000 tonnes, a rise of almost 69% compared with the prior season.

The real test for Burkina Faso will be scaling up its newly expanded processing base sufficiently to steadily displace imported clothing and textile products.

Figures from the National Institute of Statistics and Demography (INSD) show the country brought in an average of nearly 38,946 tonnes of clothing and related accessories each year between 2019 and 2023.

These import volumes highlight both a competitive hurdle for local manufacturers and a substantial opportunity for the country’s expanding production base.

By strengthening capabilities in weaving, dyeing and garment manufacturing, Burkina Faso is seeking to transform its cotton industry — moving away from a model built around raw material exports and toward a value chain that retains far more economic benefit within its own borders.
