Brazil cotton production seen at near record again in 2026/27

Date:

Brazil’s cotton exporters’ body, ANEA has raised its estimate for the current crop and nudged up its outlook for the 2026/27 season, pointing to what could be a favourable sowing window in the world’s biggest cotton shipper.

According to an ANEA statement, a large share of Brazilian cotton is sown as a second crop once soybeans have been harvested, notably in Mato Grosso.

Faster-than-usual soybean planting in that leading producing state therefore sets up a promising backdrop.

ANEA lifted its 2026/27 output October forecast by 5.9% from its August figure, to 4.267 million tonnes. That would come close to the 4.271 million tonnes in the earlier cotton season.

ANEA President Dawid Wajs said the 2026/27 revision reflects the favourable soybean planting window and growers’ signals on the coming cycle. He added that the organisation keeps watch on climate risks, El Niño in particular.

With back-to-back record harvests above 4.2 million tonnes, Brazil is set to sustain sizeable export volumes while demand stays firm, Wajs said.

He expressed confidence that the country will still set new export records across the second half of 2026 and first half of 2027 combined, given the considerably large crop that must be shipped.

ANEA estimates second-half of 2026 shipments at about 1.6 million tonnes and first-half of 2027 exports at 1.8 million tonnes.

Wajs noted that the sector has recorded very significant growth in third-quarter exports to markets such as India, Bangladesh, Türkiye and Vietnam.

Reflecting the larger crop, ANEA also lifted its forecast for carryover stocks at December 2026 to 3.038 million tonnes, up from the 2.914 million tonnes projected previously.
