China targets Applied DNA Sciences among retaliatory countermeasures on US

Date:

China has rolled out a fresh package of retaliatory economic measures targeting the United States, alongside punitive action against half a dozen American organisations, in a direct response to restrictions previously put in place by Washington.

Beijing’s Commerce Ministry indicated that this latest move follows on from a US prohibition on Chinese-made drone imports, together with the inclusion of 43 mainland firms on the list tied to the Uyghur Forced Labour Prevention Act, which mainly impacts its textile and apparel exports as the Uyghur region accounts for 90% of its cotton production.

Among the half-dozen US organisations now facing sanctions are Applied DNA Sciences and the advocacy group Human Rights in China, both of which have been prohibited from engaging in commercial dealings or other forms of cooperation with entities based on the mainland.

The ministry called on American authorities to reverse what it described as unjustified restrictive measures, cautioning that further retaliatory steps could follow should Washington press ahead with additional curbs down the line.

News of the countermeasures emerges shortly before Chinese President Xi Jinping’s anticipated trip to the United States, slated for September.
